More bassackwardness - Superbowl ad slots are huge both in price and in reach, but, as usual the brilliantly slimey and devious marketers of today have discovered how to scam their way way into the superbowl hype. First, you submit an ad that you know won’t be accepted by CBS (either because you’re a broke ass company or your ad sucks) for a superbowl ad spot. Once your ad has been submitted and summarily rejected you start promoting your “BANNED Superbowl commercial”. Well, you do’nt even have to do that - the media will do it for you. Don’t all of these news organizations understand that playing up the banned ad story ends up getting them played? Now remember you haven’t paid a penny to promote this ad which is usually the most expensive part of the whole ad process, and here is where it gets good - don’t do anything, don’t pay anyone, just sit back and watch it take off - for free! A lot of times the banned ads are more fun to watch than the ads that are chosen to run during the superbowl. Because of this new promotion of banned ads I don’t even have to suffer through the superbowl to get my fix of hilarious, risque, naughty, sometimes brilliant slices of tv madness. Marketers are like a plague - it’s starts slowly, creeping insidiously through the ranks until BAM every money making shmo will be submitting their 60 seconds of BS so they too can market their BANNED Superbowl ad. But like others before them, the over-saturated crap market will become clogged and constipated, useless and marketers will have to migrate to the next unsuspecting soon to be over marketed advertising scam.

Rejected or not, Super Bowl ads generate buzz

ca.news.yahoo.com

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The marketing buzz that a Super Bowl television commercial creates is invaluable to advertisers, whether it gets broadcast or not.

With a national audience that could reach an estimated one-third of 300 million Americans on February 7, the National Football League’s championship game is more important than ever for companies and advocacy groups.

With a price tag of almost $3 million for 30 seconds, it can be just as effective for those submitting ads to have a spot rejected as inappropriate and use the attention generated from that to drive visitors and business to their websites.

“A whole cottage industry has grown up out of trying to make use of network turndowns,” said Martin Franks, executive vice president of planning, policy and government affairs at CBS Corp, which is televising the NFL game this year. “It can happen in the middle of July, but obviously this is a wonderfully high-profile opportunity.”

The commercial approval process has come under heavy scrutiny this year since CBS approved an ad sponsored by a conservative Christian group called Focus on the Family. Some U.S. women’s groups have urged the network not to air the ad — which stars college football star Tim Tebow — saying it has a strident anti-abortion rights message.

Industry executives and analysts recognize Internet domain company GoDaddy.com, which annually airs several ads during the Super Bowl as the best at attracting attention for its ads. On Thursday, GoDaddy in a press release invited consumers to view its latest rejected ad at the company website.

“GoDaddy was one of the first advertisers who set out to capitalize on the fact that ads get rejected and that there’s a PR opportunity in that,” said Tim Calkins, marketing professor with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. GoDaddy is one of the PR masters of the Super Bowl.”

Other companies that have had ads rejected as inappropriate this year include online jobs site CareerBuilder.com and gay male dating site Mancrunch.com. Last year, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) garnered the spotlight for an ad General Electric’s NBC rejected.

The companies that have been rejected unanimously say they do not submit ads simply to have them rejected, but CBS’s Franks said a rejection and the attention that it generates can be as valuable as paying for a network ad.

“They’ve found a loophole in an otherwise well intentioned process,” he said in an interview.

I’ve spent many hours watching annoying children’s shows on TV. The ones I hate the most are the ones with the creepy old people dancing around acting goofy - I don’t know why it bugs me, it just gives me the creeps. Especially when they’re old men. In my mind they put up this goody-goody front but when they are home behind closed doors they live a strange, perverted life. Have you ever wondered what these old guys go through to appeal to young kids? The make-up, hair color, etc. Once in a while we get a little glimpse into the “real” lives of some of these kids entertainers. I ran across a picture of the original yellow wiggle yesterday and it shocked me. Along with the picture came the story of how he was splitting up with his wife because he got some other girl pregnant, blah, blah, blah. I guess maybe because we allow these people into our homes in front of our kids we hold them to a higher standard. What a difference three years makes!

When my kids get hurt, I panic and take care of them. If they are in danger I do everything I can to help them. I CANNOT believe that parents would intentionally put their kids in danger. I don’t care that they are in the stunt business, stunts go wrong - I could never put my kids in that kind of danger. Not only do these guys let their kids participate in these crazy stunts, now their parents are trying to get them on a reality show. Do they not see what happens to families who have been on reality shows? They say they want to being their family closer. How naive. If you need attention that’s fine but please LEAVE YOUR KIDS OUT OF IT!!!!!!!

Take a naked guy stick him in front of a fan, turn in on hi and you got a great commercial. The only problem is, I bet every guy who saw it ran out and bought an industrial fan instead of buying condoms. Come on trojan, can’t you make a commercial with a guy driving home from work - stopping and buying flowers, chocolates and a box of condoms then showing up at home, presenting the wife with all the goodies and then the guy says, sit down and relax honey I’ll do the dishes - the woman looks at him in awe and wonder - while he washes the dishes the camera pans to the women who’s preparing for a wild night of whoopie. Think about it, you’ll have every housewife AND every husband rushing out to buy them.

Last week when I was driving my evil spawn to school and cursing out the morons all around me - I had a light bulb moment. I thought, wouldn’t it be cool if I set up a webcam in my car and started a site just for car webcams? I don’t know about anyone else, but I turn into a freakin psycho, raving lunatic, flaming bitch, etc. etc. I’d have a lot of fun watching other sweet innocent mommies letting loose while stuck in traffic listening to their crazy kids screaming at each other over who is dumber spongebob or dora. There was a time when I tried to watch my language in front of the kids - and it works - EXCEPT when I’m driving behind an idiot. Like I tell my kids - these rules apply 1. Do what I say not what I do 2. What happens in the car, stays in the car and C. The next time someone cuts you in line and you get in trouble for a potty mouth don’t blame me!

Speaking of potty mouth, I wish I was British. They have the coolest slang. I was watching Nick with the kids the other night and I keep seeing ads for a show called “Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging” I love that word - Snogging - (Definition -foreplay without contact with the genital organs) and hobknocker (which I heard on iCarly means; when a guy hits you in the face with his penis.) SHIT! What is Nick teaching my kids anyway? Anyway, the British can call you names and make it sound lovely!

I guess I never really thought about slang in America, it just sounds rude when we say it. “Yo dog, wuzzzzzzzz up?” Do you know they have books to help people understand American slang - I didn’t but when I was researching British slang I came across this book: (I Love it!)

Product Description

America swears by it!

In the English language, swearing is essential to effective communication.
Whether you want to succeed in business, school, or social circles, a
strong command of vocabulary is absolutely necessary. Just imagine a
stranger to our shores, trying to comprehend the following conversation:

John: Mary, would you like to attend the opera this evening?
Mary: F*cking-A. should I wear my black dress?
John: Why the f*ck not?
Mary: F*cked if I know-Oh, f*ck! I just remembered. It got f*cked up in the
wash.
John: Well, f*ck the opera. Let’s stay home and f*ck.
Mary: Good f*cking idea.

English as a Second F*cking Language (ESF*L) is the perfect way for
nonnative speakers to learn the basics of swearing. At the same time, it
also offers native speakers a wide variety of twists and new refinements.
Page after page, ESF*L provides a smorgasbord of swearing synonyms
designed to boost your vocabulary-everything from the conventional d*mn
and sh*t to a host of more inventive terms that would make any truck driver
blush. And when you’re finished reading, our Final F*cking Exam is the
perfect test of your swearing skills. You’ll be surprised by how much you’ve
learned!

I don’t know where I picked up such naughty language - I wish I could blame it on my parents, but I never heard them say anything worse than “For Petes Sake” or “For Cryin Out Loud” . The first time I heard my dad say a curse word I was 18 and was at work with him one day. I was sitting outside his office and heard him say shit and almost fell over - that was the day my whole world changed (ok maybe a little dramatic, but come on - my dad curses?!) If I had to blame it on someone or something it would have to be the United States Navy - I worked for them in the Civil Service for 10 years and they welcome you in the morning with a hardy “Good Fucking morning to you - how the hell was your evening - we’ve got a shitload of work so you better drink some damn coffee to get you going.” I take no responsibilty I was brainwashed.

In reality I think this must be another case of a desensitized public. I can’t even imagine hearing the Ingalls or the Waltons cursing at each other but if you turn on just about any show on primetime tv out come the potty mouths - do they block any words anymore?

Maybe I smoked too much pot when I was in high school and my brain cells are all shriveled up but I SWEAR the supermarkets are in cahoots with each other. I think they hold secret meetings weekly and decide who is going to reduce prices on certain items and increase the price on others so they can get people to shop at each store. For example - I go to store “A” and they have coffee for $5.99 instead of the $9.99 at store “B”. Store “B” has ice cream for $3.99 while store “A” sells it for $5.99 - this is where the conspiracy comes in. Instead of the stores fighting against each other for our business they have us doing all the work, shopping at every store, running around trying to find out who has the lowest prices that week. I never want to become one of those crazy people who run all over town, spending hours and gallons of gas to save a dollar on a roll of TP. I do two big shoppings a month - I go in and get everything I need for the next 2 weeks - I don’t want to have to go to more than one store to do my shopping. When did buying food turn into some kind of game? It’s like the great race - they send out a flyer with directions to all the best deals on the eastern seaboard and you spend the next month of your life trying to save an extra buck. Why can’t one store just give you the best deal every single time you go there. Where is the loyalty? Quit playing footsies with the store down the street in the hopes that you might steal a couple of their customers and take care of the people who already spend all of their money in your store! Makes me want to scream!!!

While watching the destruction in Haiti I can’t help but feel extreme sadness for everyone living in that area. To help out, visit The Red Cross (make sure you don’t donate to just anyone!)

At the same time, I can’t help but question the hypocrisy of certain Governments who are jumping at the chance to send support, both financially and physically to this area destroyed by an extreme act of nature. Why aren’t you showing the same level of care and support for the million civilians who have lost their lives since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Is it different when the destruction is caused by man? In one corner of the world we’re running off to help those in need while in the other corner of the world we are the cause of those in need. Why have I never turned the TV on and seen these numbers reported on the news? Why are so many people being killed. Can you imagine if over a million people were killed in the US or England because of something another country did? Instead of pouring millions of dollars down the drain through incompetent financial industries, you should be sending it to the families in Iraq and Afghanistan in an attempt to begin making up to the them the complete destruction of their families and lives.

A study, published in prestigious medical journal The Lancet, estimated that over 600,000 Iraqis had been killed as a result of the invasion as of July 2006. Iraqis have continued to be killed since then. The estimate that over a million Iraqis have died received independent confirmation from a prestigious British polling agency in September 2007. Opinion Research Business estimated that 1.2 million Iraqis have been killed violently since the US-led invasion.

Most recent update: September 11, 2009.

About 251 times as many people have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq than in the ghastly attacks of September 11, 2001. More than 108 times as many people have been killed in these wars and occupations than in all terrorist attacks in the world from 1993-2004. The 2004 report showed terrorism at an all-time high, and after numerous experts suggested that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were fueling the increase, subsequent reports have remained classified.

# Sources and methodology:

U.S. and coalition authorities rarely provide any public estimates of Afghan or Iraqi troop or civilian casualties or injuries. In this absence of official data, we present the latest and lowest credible estimates we’ve found. Where a range is estimated (for example, 2,500-4,000), the lower figure is always cited.

[1] Afghan troops killed: Based on estimate and tracking by Mark Herold, Ph.D at the University of New Hampshire, as detailed at his website. For casualties since Dr. Herold’s last update in July 2004, we’ve made a crude guess based on the average of 45 monthly deaths Dr. Herold recorded among Afghan military during 2004’s first seven months. Dr. Herold’s count is 8,587, and our extrapolation adds another 2,565 deaths, from the end of Dr. Herold’s tally through the end of April 2009.

[2] Afghan troops seriously injured: Posted number reflects our estimate, using a conservative, historically-based ratio of 3:1 (serious injuries to fatalities) for troops during wartime.

[3] Afghan civilians killed: Based on estimate and tracking by Dr. Herold, as detailed at his website. For casualties since Dr. Herold’s last update in July 2004, we’ve made a crude guess based on the average of 72 monthly deaths Dr. Herold recorded among Afghan civilians (with deaths among Taliban and Taliban affiliates included in Afghan civilian casualties) during 2004’s first seven months. Dr. Herold’s count is 3,485, and our extrapolation adds another 4,104 deaths, from the end of Dr. Herold’s tally through the end of April 2009.

[4] Afghan civilians seriously injured: Posted number reflects our estimate, using a conservative, historically-based ratio of 1.8:1 (serious injuries to fatalities) for civilians during wartime.

[5] U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan: US military deaths in Afghanistan are announced by US Department of Defense and CENTCOM, and tallied at Wikipedia, which notes that “the American figure is for deaths ‘In and Around Afghanistan’ which, as defined by the U.S. Department of Defense, includes some deaths in Pakistan and Uzbekistan, the death of a DoD civilian employee, and the deaths of four CIA operatives.”

[6] U.S. troops seriously injured in Afghanistan: To the best of our knowledge, this data is not publicly tracked (if you know a reliable source for this information, please let us know). Posted number reflects our estimate, using a conservative, historically-based ratio of 3:1 (serious injuries to fatalities) for troops.

[7] Other coalition troops killed in Afghanistan: Coalition military deaths in Afghanistan are announced by US Department of Defense and CENTCOM, and tallied at Wikipedia.

[8] Other coalition troops seriously injured in Afghanistan: To the best of our knowledge, this data is not publicly tracked (if you know a reliable source for this information, please let us know). Posted number reflects our estimate, using a conservative, historically-based ratio of 3:1 (serious injuries to fatalities) for troops.

[9] Contractors killed in Afghanistan: Based on this July 2007 Reuters article, which cites US Department of Labor statistics obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The article reports that 75 private contractors had been killed in Afghanistan from the beginning of hostilities in 2001 through July 2007.

[10] Contractors seriously injured in Afghanistan: Based on the same article, 2,428 private contractors had been seriously wounded in Afghanistan from the beginning of hostilities in 2001 through July 2007.

[11] Journalists killed in Afghanistan: Based on numbers tracked by Wikipedia.

[12] Journalists seriously injured in Afghanistan: To the best of our knowledge, this data is not publicly tracked (if you know a reliable source for this information, please let us know).

[13] Iraqi troops killed: Based on an estimate of 30,000 deaths, offered by US Gen. Tommy Franks, cited by the Washington Post on Oct. 23, 2003. No estimate has been made publicly since that time.

[14] Iraqi troops seriously injured: Posted number reflects our estimate, using a conservative, historically-based ratio of 3:1 (serious injuries to fatalities) for troops during wartime.

[15] Iraqi civilians killed: Based on this study [pdf], published in the British medical journal The Lancet in October 2006. The study concluded that at least 392,979 Iraqi civilians had been killed in the occupation, in addition to deaths expected from Iraq’s normal death rate, through July 2006. The study’s mid-point estimate was 654,965, and its high estimate was 942,636. U.S. authorities, including President Bush himself, have loudly complained that the study is based on “flawed methodology” and “pretty well discredited,” but as often happens when Bush speaks, that’s simply untrue. The study was conducted by Johns Hopkins University, and used standard, widely accepted, peer-reviewed scientific methodology. Explained very briefly, Iraqi respondants in numerous randomly selected locations were asked about recent deaths in their households, and family members were able to show a death certificate to document 80% of the deaths they described. Results from these interviews were extrapolated nationwide, the same way political opinion polls extrapolate a few hundred interviews to reflect nationwide opinions. It’s the same method used by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to estimate deaths from disease outbreak anywhere in the world, the same method routinely trusted by the U.S. and U.K. when counting deaths from warfare, civil unrest, or other situations anywhere in the world. From the study’s lowest estimate of 392,979 deaths occurring over the first 40 months of occupation, we have extended this rate of civilian deaths (9,824 deaths per month) over subsequent months of the occupation since the study was published.

[16] Iraqi civilians seriously injured: Posted number reflects our estimate, using a conservative, historically-based ratio of 1.8:1 (serious injuries to fatalities) for civilians during wartime.

[17] U.S. troops killed in Iraq: Based on numbers announced by US Department of Defense and CENTCOM, and tracked by the good folks at Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.

[18] U.S. troops seriously injured in Iraq: Based on numbers announced by US Department of Defense and CENTCOM, and tracked by the good folks at Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. (According to this article by Salon reporter Mark Benjamin, an additional 25,289 service members had been evacuated from Iraq and Afghanistan for injuries or illnesses, but not included in the official numbers and not included in the numbers presented on this page.)

[19] Other coalition troops killed in Iraq: Based on numbers announced by US Department of Defense and CENTCOM, and tracked by the good folks at Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.

[20] Other coalition troops seriously injured in Iraq: To the best of our knowledge, this data is not publicly tracked (if you know a reliable source for this information, please let us know). Posted number reflects our estimate, assuming the same injury to death ratio suffered by American troops in the same battlefield.

[21] Contractors killed in Iraq: Based on this July 2007 Reuters article, which cites US Department of Labor statistics obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The article reports that 933 private contractors had been killed in Iraq from the beginning of hostilities in 2001 through July 2007.

[22] Contractors seriously injured in Iraq: Based on the same article, 10,569 private contractors had been seriously wounded in Iraq from the beginning of hostilities in 2001 through July 2007.

[23] Journalists killed in Iraq: Deaths tracked by Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.
