Searching for A House

We’ve been looking for a larger house for a while now so while I was walking to the park with my daughter today I was really excited to see a beautiful old house for sale. It’s only a couple blocks from our place now, well made (over 100 years old) GORGEOUS!! So, when we are [...]

Concealed Weapons in Bars and Wine Tasting at Liquor Stores – Who the Hell Comes Up With This Shit?

Posted on02 Jul 2010

July 1, the day when new state laws take effect.  Lawmakers have the opportunity to make our communities safer, smarter, better places to live.  In this enlightened day and age you expect these brilliant minds to put together legislation that will help our states environment, budget and overall well-being.  Not in a million years would I expect to see this:

Few new laws got as much scrutiny or partisan wrangling as the guns-in-bars statute. It allows holders of concealed weapons permits to take their firearms into places where alcohol is served, provided the gun’s bearer doesn’t imbibe.

OR THIS

Wine and Liquor Tastings

ABC stores will now be able to offer wine and liquor tastings at their stores.

REALLY?!! Concealed weapons in bars and wine tasting in liquor stores. Just Brilliant! Now I know why we pay these politicians the big bucks. Who the hell is writing these laws anyway? Let’s get everyone drunk with free wine tasting, send them over to the local watering whole with their concealed weapon and let them hang around a bunch of stupid drunk college kids – that’s safe!

I know where all the bums will be hanging out.  Maybe with this new law I’ll be able to go to the store without being hit up for some cash.  They can just head over to the local ABC store for a delightful wine tasting.

That’s our money at work.

Add that to the Texas legislators trying to criminalize homosexuality (5 – 15 years jail time), and you have the perfect scenario for American death. Those eagles would have plenty of dead bodies to feed on. Pffft

I don’t like guns any where – people shouldn’t have them. But a wine tasting in a liquor store? I love that. Some states wine is sold in grocery stores, which is the only civilized thing to do. and the stores hold wine an cheese and snackie tastings – I used to go in just for those. Makes grocery shopping so much more fun.

I think you might have another virus. I tried to leave a comment just now and the whole screen went grey with some strange box on it.

Okay, that one worked. What I said before was that we have wine tasting in our liquor stores, have for a long time, and I appreciate them because I can try before I buy. Our liquor stores have so many regulations and hoops to pass through (no selling on Sundays, can’t sell booze after 8pm, can’t open before 9am, can’t be part of a grocery store, must be a stand alone liquor store) that I am surprised they let them have wine tasting.

    wilmarad – crazy!!

Grace – I guess I feel that laws about wine tasting are an extreme waste of time. I mean really, is this how our politicians spend their time? I have two winemakers in my family and have been to a ton of wine tasting and they are a lot of fun. I just don’t get legislation of wine tasting.

Jen – I understand all the drinking in Minnesota, it’s cold. These lawmakers are weenies. Thomas Jefferson wanted wine he started making his own (which still grow at Jefferson Vineyards – my brother is the winemaker there) – I can’t imagine Tom, George and friends sitting around a table creating laws about wine tasting.

I remember seeing a sign on a bar in Minnesota saying guns weren’t allowed before 8 p.m. Excuse me? Yeah, let’s wait til we get lit up to bring on the guns! Guess you gotta keep family time at the bar sacred.

Sorry, but as a legal and careful gun owner, and a former bartender, I’d rather the good guys have guns too. Especially in bars.

Trust me, the bad guys don’t give a shit if you have a no gun law, no gun sign or no gun anything. They’ll get them, carry them, and use them regardless of how defensless the rest of us are.

Actually, forget that I said sorry to start with. I’m not sorry that I have a right to carry a gun and protect myself, my children and the rest of the citizens that deserve it.

I get it that you are worried about the stupid drunk asses that might whip out their gun in an argument without thinking, however those guys are the same ones who would pick up a beer bottle and do just as much damage – or get in their car and do even more.

  • sheila

    CatLadyLarew – That’s a good one.

Jenn – I have never felt like I needed a weapon of any kind when I’ve been out at a bar or restaurant and even if I had a gun I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t take it out to eat with me, especially if I had my kids with me and I sure as hell don’t want to be going out to restaurants were there might be bad guys with guns and wanna be heros who are not trained enough or responsible enough to go up against the guys they feel like they need the weapons for. As a matter of fact I’d be willing to bet you that the first casualty from this law won’t be a “bad” guy but probably some bystander who is killed by a gun owner who thought that because he or she owned a gun, this meant that they knew how to use one in a dangerous situation. Research and statistics have shown that guns intensify crime situations, and increase the likelihood of a more violent or lethal outcome.(1)

guns and wine tasting.well I wonder if they can come up with any thing stupid.Oh they could the can continue to all texting while driving.that is a sure way of killing off part of the population.

  • http://www.shoot-me-now.com Katherine

You can DRIVE to an ABC store, TASTE the stuff and drive off? Are you for REAL??!!! That is CRAZY! (she said as she grabbed her car keys…) (OK, that last part was a joke!) ;)

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse Linda Medrano

Sheila, alcohol and guns are the worst idea ever. Guns just intensify situations. If I’m home alone, I count on my ppu’s (personal protection units) to protect me (Harry and Honey, big dogs), although my husband has guns, I’d rather not even pull them out of the safe. The “good guys” having guns too makes no sense to me whatever. So you can get even more people shot in a crossfire? Great.

I had never heard of the wine tastings at grocery stores. That’s just asking for trouble. We voted on the guns in bars thing in our state recently – it was split out into a county vote. Thankfully not many counties in my area voted for it to pass, so it’s not legal right now… I’m sure it’ll come up for vote again soon.

I am not crazy about the idea of alcohol and firearms. Nothing says serious damage like a drunk with a gun (gun laws don’t require that gun owners be responsible). As for wine tastings, I have to come out in favor of that. I am always in favor of a party.

  • http://www.real-american-truth.blogspot.com The Real American

I couldn’t agree with you more, but for an entirely different reason…. Why, should the government have the authority to make our own personal decisions for us anyway? If guns and alcohol are legally obtained products, if they are being utilized responsibly, and if the bar or liquor store owner agrees to it [since it is his private property], then why are our politicians wasting their time telling all of the various parties what they can do?

Just because I open my property to business and customer traffic, doesn’t mitigate the fact in any way that it is Private Property – governed by the rules of the Property Owner, and subject to the customers choice at supporting it or not by his/her own free choice! If you don’t like: guns, alcohol, smoking, naked dancers, or gambling then go somewhere else… no one is forcing you to go anywhere against your free will. nor, is there a shortage of adequate choices in an open and free market. Geez, folks… what the #$%^& is wrong with you? Are you even Americans at all?

I am so sick and tired of all you Leftists telling others what they can and cannot do… it absolutely disgusts me to have to listen to these BS arguments everywhere I go. If you love Authoritarian Governments so much, there are hundreds of them to choose from – but until recently there was only 1 America, and [by God] I want my nation back! It was lovers of Freedom who built and founded it, not whining little pansies like these so called modern Americans.

Nor, am I saying this because I am pro: guns, alcohol, tobacco, or gambling – because I am not… but I am Pro Freedom.

Mike – I’m sure that will be next

Katherine – So, how was the wine?

Linda – That’s exactly what I was thinking

Momma Drama – I hope it doesn’t go through. I’ll really have to stop and think about whether I even want to go out to a restaurant or bar now? I’ve seen plenty of fights and disagreements how would they have ended if everyone had a gun?

Anne – It’s just that state approved drinking and driving seems kind of, well, stupid

The Real American – VERY well said! This country is being picked apart so much, eventually we won’t be allowed to do anything. Whatever happened to common sense?

And I continue to be embarrassed to even say I am a human being. Seriously..is it that they just want us to kill each other off…maybe that is their answer to the economy deficit..

Our grandparents and great grandparents ect.. are probably rolling over in their graves with how we have been destroying this world they worked so hard to develop|

  • http://thedeevolutionofman.com/ megaman

Why do we even need to waste the paper and the time? Someone that will rob the place, or others wise harm anyone with a gun, probably isn’t concerned with the law that says that guns aren’t allowed in liquor stores.

Why not let the person that owns the store, pays taxes, state sales tax, Federal tax, employee tax and probably a list of others taxes determine if they want to allow wine tasting.
