More Exciting Than Having Kids? Dropping Them Off On The First Day of the School Year

In two weeks my vacation begins. Kids go back to school on Sept 7th. Hopefully I will then slowly recuperate from this idiocy disease which has stolen my mind and ability to function (of course I’m gonna blame the kids otherwise I’d have to actually admit that it was me and isn’t that the whole [...]

Where Has All The Humor Gone?

Posted on15 Jun 2010

I’m depressed, in a humor funk.  I haven’t laughed uproarously in ages.  I’m in my early 40s – 29 for the 14th time to my kids. I was lucky enough to grow up in the era of Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murry, Gilda Radner, Gene Wilder and other comedic greats.  I remember forcing myself to stay awake long enough to sneak downstairs and watch Saturday Night Live and if I was able to catch Eddie Murphy doing a Mr Robinsons neighborhood I was in hysterical laugh heaven for a week.

These guys were able to take the lamest concepts and leave you rolling on the floor gasping for breath.  Do you remember “Deep Thoughts” ?

So I have to wonder why. Why isn’t anything funny anymore. Sure I’ll laugh when my kid runs into the wall or when my husband rips one while he’s praying – but, when someone who gets paid to make me laugh gives their best effort only to leave me shaking my head in sadness and despair I have to wonder is it me? Am I too cynical and jaded? Am I now relegated to laugh only over disaster and disgusting bodily functions?  Shoot, the people who used to crack me up are lame these days.  Eddie Murphy, doing the donkey on Shrek is the funniest he’s been in 20 years

Your mission – Make me laugh – I implore you!!

  1. I didn’t watch Saturday Night Live when I was younger, but my husband did (he’s 30) and knows all the classic sketches. He says the same thing about that show – what happened to all the funny people? He loved all the others that I can’t think of – like Will Ferrell and his castmates.

It’s not you – it’s them, them meaning the rest of the world… There’s nothing funny on t.v. anymore or at attractions/functions to go to as a family…

  2. I can’t make you laugh when you made me laugh that would be like a “gotcha last” kinda thing and then I’d be disqualified.

Yes, where have all the funny people gone? I laugh more by blog than in person these days. Bloggers are crazy funny. Maybe someday they’ll all go public and have us rolling again. But until then, thankfully poop are farts never get old (-:

  3. OMG! I loved “Deep Thoughts” by Jack Handy. And I will still laugh out loud when I see any Saturday Night Live that includes the cast you mentioned. But NOW? This decade of SNL has NOT been funny. Not like it used to be.

I dont think you are jaded. I think you just know what’s REALLY funny.

  4. I LOVED deep thoughts. My favorite was , “One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. “Oh, no,” I said. “Disneyland burned down.” He cried and cried, but I think that deep down, he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”

  5. I wish I could make you laugh but I am afraid that I am no help. I seem to be in the same funk. Maybe, I need to have sex. Yeah, that will be good for a laugh. ;)

Momma Drama – it’s so sad trying trying to explain to your kids how funny comedians used to be (and it makes me feel really old)

mrsblogalot – you’re right – bloggers are pretty damn funny. (your posts always crack me up) That’s just about the only time I do laugh which is why I enjoy blogging so much.

meleah rebeccah – I wish I ‘d catch the old ones more often. I’d rather watch those than the new ones they have out.

Katherine – I LOVE that one too.

Jen – Moms don’t have sex!

  7. I think it’s an age thing, though I shall admit I’m a young college student, so I suppose I’m not in much of a place to get nostalgic. I do think older tv shows and so forth were hilariously funny compared to now though. It could be an age thing, since I used to the think the Simpson’s was the funniest show on air, but now it hardly even makes me chuckle.

I tend to rely on professional comedians, they still manage to get a few laughs out of me. Shows like Mock The Week and QI work a treat.

  8. When I think of movies, I think of it as writers have gotten lazy. These days, writers try to shock, using bad language or gross humor. It wasn’t acceptable when we were younger so writers had to try harder to be funny.

  9. This was my all-time favorite Jack Handy quote:

“If Alien was my friend, I’d like to be with him when he went to the dentist. When they started drilling, he’d probably go nuts and start eating everybody. That Alien!”

    Gets me every single time.

  10. Same here, Sheila. I so haven’t laughed lately that my cheeks got chubbier and my jawline disappeared. Luckily, I am going to post something kinda funny soon. Hope you’re well.

  11. Things were always funnier when I was smoking weed.

  12. Even SNL has lost most of its funny these days.

  13. Yep. I dont even watch SNL anymore.

I really hope your almost out of the funk!
