I’m a Navy brat. I spent a lot of my young life around other military families living on different Navy bases around the World. When I finished school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so my dad “suggested” I try to get a job with the Government. So, off I went to the Office of Civilian Personnel Management in Washington DC to take the Civil Service exam. My dad and I made a day of it. He was working in Crystal City at the Naval Supply Systems Command which was about 5 minutes away from DC. It was pretty easy, I did great and was called in the next couple of days for some interviews. The job I ended up taking was at the same place my dad was stationed but he was leaving within the month to go over to the pentagon so it wasn’t too wierd. It was so exciting driving over the beltway and suddenly seeing the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial in the distance with the Sun rising over it. I felt like such a grown up. I was Hot Stuff! The worst part for me was going around to the different offices and being introduced as Capt Reagans daughter, I really wanted to make a place on my own merit. One day a bunch of people were standing around the coffee pot yacking when the Commanding Officer, Admiral S. walks out of his office, sees me, comes over and very loudly exclaims, “Sheila, you probably don’t remember me, but I know you from when your dad and I were both stationed in Athens – I used to change your Diaper” – WHAT?! In front of 10 other people my first week at a brand new job?!!! OH NO HE DIDN’T!!!!!!!!!!
