The interent is such an amazing tool. It’s hard to think of life without it. I have been able to stay in constant contact with family members as far away as Scotland and Dubai - it’s really exciting – BUT – do some people take it too far? Do they put too much of their life online? Do they invade others privacy by posting pictures and information without permisission?
My husband is a really private person and never joins any of the online social sites. Can you imagine how suprised (and irritated) he was when I showed him a bunch of pictures from his teen years that his brother had posted on
? I think his brother should have checked with him before he posted these images, is anything private anymore?
Last week I was on facebook and came across an old high school friend who had posted a picture of a bunch of us 8th grade girls at a slumber party – it was fun to see and a good memory, but it also worried me – I’ve taken some crazy pictures throughout high school and college – before I could ever imagine something like the internet. Would I have let my girlfriends take those pictures of the pool party where we were all drinking and skinnydipping? Hopefully not.
I don’t know that it will do any good to suggest that people stop and think BEFORE posting images/stories about other people online. Do you think that person would mind? Are you going to embarass someone? You might even be getting someone in trouble or fired.
In this day and age kids are raised online and most know that they need to be careful what they put on these social networking sites. I never thought I had to worry about anything – I haven’t taken an indecent photo for a while now – but now I realize that no one is safe. Information from years ago can start showing up at anytime. I haven’t worried about my parents finding something of mine in years and all of a sudden I feel like I’m back in high school worrying that they are going to stumble onto something. I think I’ll change my name and move to Alaska.
