Harborfest, or Harbor-mess as I like to call it – the City of Norfolk’s big annual summer festival – they’ve got “The Parade of Sails” cool boats from all over the world, lots of live music, food and beer and of course thousands of hot, sweaty, annoying, drunk people. They screw up traffic closing down a bunch of roads for a weekend so it’s a real pain in the butt. I just

can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would want to stick themselves in the middle of this crap intentinally. (Jeez, I sound like a cranky old woman)
If someone asked me what my perfect day would be I would have to say it would go something like this – me (and only me), a cold rainy day, a good book, a cinnamon dolce latte from starbucks, and a roaring fire – ahhh heaven.
I’ll take peace and quiet over crowds and noise anytime. I guess I don’t really like people very much. Not because there is anything wrong with them but because most people expect you to interact in some way and I usually just don’t feel like it. Maybe it comes from being raised in a family of 8 – you never get a minute of silence. I enjoy being alone.
Now let’s get to the point of this post – vacations – I was watching the news yesterday and they closed down the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel for about 6 hours yesterday – this is the main tunnel from anywhere north of Norfolk headed toward the oceanfront. I started feeling sorry for people stuck in the traffic, but just for a second. If your dumb enough to travel to a resort on a holiday weekend ya kinda get what you deserve.

I live in a great area for vacations. Virginia Beach is 30 minutes one way, Williamsburg, Jamestown and Bush Gardens are 30 minutes the other way and the Blue Ridge Mountains are 2 hours away. You’d think with the summer holidays here I’d have a plan in place to enjoy these beautiful vacation destinations. NO WAY! When a holiday is looming on the calender it almost feels like a hurricane is on the horizon – I run up to the grocery store and stock up, go to blockbusters and grab a bunch of movies, hit the used book store for a stash of books and get my kids art supplies and video games to keep them quiet busy, and I hunker down. Not to be seen again, until the holiday is loooong gone and the tourists have fled back from whence they came.
