Sending Your Kids to the Lions Den

My last post was about my son being robbed and assaulted on his way home from school.  Since that post the kid who assaulted him has plead guilty to felony robbery and will be sentenced next week.  In the mean time he was placed in an alternative school but is still out running around doing [...]

Reality Has Ruined My Illusions of Glamour

Posted on08 Jul 2009

Whenever someone like Michael Jackson dies it really makes me start to think about my own mortality.  He was too young die, he had it all – fame, money – somehow he seemed larger than life, invincible.  But, all his fame and fortune couldn’t save them from death.   Then my mind starts to wander and I have to wonder if maybe he isn’t better off.  I can’t even imagine the life he lead.  He practically lived in seclusion from the time he was 10.  He couldn’t go anywhere or do anything EVER without a bunch of people in his face.  He would be on stage in front of thousands, screaming, adoring fans and then he would be spirited away and hidden in a quiet hotel room, alone.

When I was young I knew a lot of people who wanted to be famous when they grew up.  I used to watch old movies with my mom.  We loved Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn , Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland – amazingly beautiful, glamourous women.  After a night of starry-eyed adoration I would fall asleep dreaming of the fabulous life I would live if I was a hollywood movie star.  The beautiful mansions, clothes, cars, jewels and men – I would make a movie in which I was the star and fall asleep dreaming of a magical world where everything was utterly, astonishingly spectacular.

As I grew up I began to realize that movie stars didn’t really live the way they were portrayed in movies, but, I still believed that they lived a privileged life that was full of every spectacular thing that money could buy.  I don’t think I ever wanted to be a movie star, it was the lifestyle I was dreamt of.

And then reality TV came along – dun . . . .dun . . . .dun

What are MY kids going to fall asleep dreaming of?  The magic is gone.  We now know how these stars really live.  We know every single nasty little thing there is to know.  We know who sleeps around, drinks and drives – we even know who doesn’t wear panties when they go out for a drive.  What ARE their managers THINKING?  Did they really think it would be a good idea to let these knuckleheads go on film WITHOUT a script?  I am sooooooo embarassed for these guys – some free advice, just smile, look pretty and shut-up.    Maybe I like living in a dream world, but that is what Hollywood is all about for me – a dream, acting – reality TV has stolen this from me.   I guess I could thank these pitiful examples of hollywood glamour because I never envy them anymore – I just feel sorry for them.

We need not wish to be a star or an astronaut or anything but who we are. Sometimes the more money you have the worse off you are.
Of course a little more would be nice. We are who we are. Our dreams and plans should be of things we can accomplish as ourselves.
You have a wonderful blog. Keep up the good work.

Great post. I definitely think Michael Jackson, was in some ways, larger than life. He inspired millions, which most celebrities cannot claim.

In regards to their managers, however, I am not entirely sure they are happy about all the flashing and “knowing of who is wearing panties or not” when they go out for a drive. I suppose it is possible their managers put them up to it, but I would guess more along the lines that their managers had nothing to do with it. The celebrity is just being him/herself in those situations and there, sadly, isn’t much the manager can probably do.

Thanks for the post and your opinions!

My older daughter seems to admire people who have contributed. She is less interested in celebrity and that type of thing. I think many celebrities are overrated and overpaid. It is too bad that people are not paid based upon their contribution to society.

I think it’s sad that the age of glamor is gone. I definitely wish we knew way less about celebrities. Fame definitely isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be, although I wouldn’t mind giving the rich part a try.
