Everywhere you look these days you see stories about fat Americans. A lot of this is attributed to fast food and sedentary lifestyles. Too many pizzas ordered while sitting on your fat butt watching TV or playing video games. I’ve never had the best eating habits – I don’t really eat meals I just kind of pick at stuff all day and I LOVE chocolate and look forward to my treat every night once I get the kids to bed.
But, now that I have kids I have to pay more attention to the food I bring into the house. If I bring in a back of chocolate and a bag of grapes what do you think the kids eat? The chocolate. So I decided to limit sweets to the weekend and to make sure the fruit bowl is always filled. I had absolutely no idea what an expensive undertaking it was going to be. I had a major epiphany – People are fat because they can’t afford to eat healthy. The cost of fresh fruits and vegetables is RIDICULOUS! I went into the grocery store the other day and bought 2 yummy bags of cherries a thing of coffeemate and an Arizona tea. When I got to the checkout and the girl said it was $50 I thought she had made a mistake, but nooo, the cherries were $6.99 a lb and each bag was about 3 lbs – Is this crazy? It’s like eating gold. I usually do a big shopping every two weeks and in between I’ll run out to get odds and ends - I spent over $80 the other day on fruits and veges, this is nuts. I need to plant my own garden or just let myself get fat – you can buy 10 cans of pringles chips for $10 and $10 huge hershey bars for $10 not to mention all the dollar menus at fast food joints. No wonder everyone is getting so huge and unhealthy, it’s a lot cheaper to eat crap so we can probably expect it to just get worse. Is it because junk food is cheaper, sells more, the companies become richer, do more marketing to people who are already sitting on their hiny’s all day? I’ve never seen a broccoli marketer putting a hot girl on TV trying to entice viewers to eat more vegetables. I’m sure there are all sorts of studies as to why people are chunking out these days but I think we should keep it simple – lower the prices on fruits and vegetables and increase the price on junk food. Problem fixed. (I’ll just go stock up on chocolate before the price increase)
