When I was young, Christmas was my favorite time of year. The day after Thanksgiving it happened, a magical transformation from boring everyday life to shiny crystal snowflakes glitterimg off millions of twinkling lights wrapped around everything in sight. The joyous spirit of the Christmas season permeated every aspect of life. Home, school, shopping, friends focused on the happiness on the season. Years of pure innocent pleasure – and then it happened, I grew up, married a grinch and slowly began resenting Christmas and all the noise and craziness that came with it. Now, my husband (let’s call him G (for Grinch)) wasn’t always such an evil grouch. As a matter of fact I can look around the walls of my living room and see the hundreds of nails that point to his once sweet holiday spirit. So, what could happen to make a man change so completely? Religion. Yes, my husband can now say “it’s against my religion”, the ultimate excuse. I mean, what can I say to that? He is such a strong believer and I love to support him. But, come on. Can’t we do Christmas without it being a religious holiday. Can it just be about family and giving? Here is where the resentment pops in. Why does everyone assume that everyone else celebrates Christmas. My kids are bombared with Christmas everywhere. At school they read stories, “The Greatest Christmas PAgeant Ever” and HAVE to participate in the chorus’s “holiday” program and parties. When I take them to stores with me it seems as if every single person you acknowledge, turns, smiles at the kids and says, “what are you getting for Christmas this year?” It was wonderful when my 3 year old smiled at the last person who asked and said, “my dad doesn’t let us celebrate Christmas.” DEAFENING SILENCE – SILENCE – When did grown-ups become so callous? In today’s society they HAVE to know that there are muslim families and jewish families and poor families – all of which probably won’t be getting presents from Santa. It must be extremely painful for these kids. But hey, we don’t want to cramp anyones christmas spirit, right?
